Children's bus shelled on Russian-Ukrainian border

21 June 2014, 08:11

A bus carrying children has been fired on, at the Russian-Ukrainian border, as it made its way to the Rostov Region. The driver managed to break through, Children's Rights Commissioner for the Russian President Pavel Astakhov stated in his Twitter microblog, reports RIA Novsoti. "A bus has been shelled at the Russian-Ukrainian border while passing into the Rostov region. The driver managed to escape the shooting," he wrote.

On Friday, Astakhov said at least five children had lost their lives as a result of the extensive military operation in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) reported in early June that seven children had been injured in clashes in eastern Ukraine since May 9.

Astakhov said Russian orphanages were ready to accommodate children trapped in war zones in Ukraine.

Since mid-April, Kiev authorities have been conducting a special military operation in the east of Ukraine to suppress the independence movement.

Moscow sees this special operation, which has already caused multiple casualties, as punitive and urges Kiev to put an immediate stop to it.

The body count, as a result of military clashes, can now be measured in dozens.

The Ukrainian Health Ministry reported last week that over 200 civilians were among the victims, among them women and children.

Due to the aggravation of the situation since the middle of June, the stream of refugees to Russia has increased, especially to the neighbouring Rostov Region.

About 10,000 Ukrainian citizens enter the Rostov Region daily. Some of them remain there while others travel further.

According to the Russian Emergency Ministry, over ten Russian regions are involved in receiving refugees from the south-east of Ukraine.

Over 200 temporary accommodation facilities, including tent camps, have been established to receive refugees in southern and central Russia.

Currently, 9,700 people with 5,300 children among them, are staying at those facilities. More than 12,000 other people are staying with relatives and friends.

More than 80 Ukrainian border guards crossed to Russia

June 21, 11:01 UTC+6

ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 21 (Itar-Tass) - More than 80 Ukrainian border guards crossed to Russia after the attack on Ukraines Izvarino checkpoint overnight. Two people were wounded, the head of the Rostov regional border guard department, Vasily Malayev, told Itar-Tass.

"Unidentified armed people on Friday attacked the Ukrainian checkpoint of Izvarino (named Donetsk on the Russian side). More than 80 Ukrainian border guards came from Izvarino to (the Russian station of) Donetsk at about 22:30 Moscow time and asked for shelter from pursuing armed persons. Two among the Ukrainian border guards were wounded. First aid was rendered to them," the Russian official said.

None among Russian border guards and civilians was hurt. The Russian side took additional border guard strengthening measures.

Earlier on Friday, another incident occurred on the Ukrainian-Russian border. Malayev said fighting started near the Ukrainian point of Dolzhansky (Novoshakhtinsk on the Russian side) at 18:40 Moscow time between militiamen who controlled the border and soldiers of Ukrainian armed forces or the National Guards.

The Russian station was also under fire, and a Russian customs officer was wounded at the site. He has undergone an operation, and there is no threat to his life. The border checkpoint stopped working.

Buildings, communication systems and other installations of Novoshakhtinsk were seriously damaged by mortar fire from the Ukrainian side.

Marks were seen on buildings from ammunition of various calibers and systems, Malayev said.

28 June 2014, 15:08

The Bukovo customs checkpoint in the Rostov region has been damaged after being hit by an artillery round fired from Ukrainian territory, Vasily Malayev, a spokesman for the Federal Security Service (FSB) border department for the Rostov region, told Interfax.

"During an exchange of fire on Ukrainian territory, Ukrainian military forces fired projectiles, some of which reached Russian territory. One round seriously damaged the building of the Bukovo customs checkpoint," Malayev said.

Another round hit the village of Vasetsky in the Bukovo district and one more exploded in the village of Shakhta-24, Malayev said. The consequences have yet to be clarified.

A similar incident occurred at the Novoshakhtinsk customs checkpoint in the Rostov region a week ago, in which a Russian customs officer was injured.

Ukraine's National Guard plots provocations off Russian border - Lugansk People's Republic

6 July 2014, 12:15

The Ukrainian National Guard is plotting provocations in the towns of Kruzhilovka, Davydo-Nikolskoye and Parkhomenko near the Russian border, the command of the Zarya rapid reaction battalion of self-proclaimed Lugansk Peoples Republic (LPR) reports on the LPRs official website.

Subversive teams disguised as self-defense fighters and wearing St. George ribbons are planning mortar attacks on the above towns in order to undermine peoples trust in the self-defense corps.

The Ukrainian side may also attempt to blame Russia for the upcoming provocations, the report says.

Three Russian checkpoints on border with Ukraine resume work

12 July 2014, 10:45

Checkpoints Donetsk, Gukovo and Novoshakhtinsk on the Russian-Ukrainian border have resumed their work, but there are practically no people at them, official representative of the border guard of the FSB of Russia in the Rostov region Vasiliy Malaev informed Interfax.

"Checkpoints Gukovo, Novoshakhtinsk and Donetsk closed due to a threat of shelling in the adjacent Ukrainian territory are working again," said Malaev.

At the same time, according to him, only at the Donetsk border crossing point there are people wishing to cross the border. "There are no people at the rest two checkpoints - Gukovo and Novoshakhtinsk," added Malaev.

The source added the shell from the Ukrainian territory had fallen in the garden of a house.

One person died there, the source said.

Ukrainian warplane invades Russia airspace

July 13, 20:09 UTC+6

During our TV footage work, a Ukrainian plane entered the Russian territory and flew above the Donetsk suburb", - special correspondent of Russias Zvezda TV channel Maxim Gritsenko said

MOSOW, July 13 /ITAR-TASS/. A plane of the Ukrainian Air Force has invaded the Russian airspace, a special correspondent of Russias Zvezda TV channel said on Sunday.

We came to the suburb of Donetsk [a Russian town bordering on Ukraine] in the first half of the day, Maxim Gritsenko said.

During our TV footage work, a Ukrainian plane entered the Russian territory and flew above the Donetsk suburb and everyone could see it deliver an air strike, apparently, against a locality in Ukraine, the journalist said.

All people were frightened and ran away, he said.

This happened at the time when investigators of Russias Investigative Committee were working on the scene of a shell incident in Donetsk, the journalist said.

Several shells fired from the Ukrainian side exploded early on Sunday in Donetsk in the southern Russian Rostov Region. One shell hit a private house, killing one and seriously wounding two persons.

Russia doesnt rule out "selective" strikes on Ukraine media reports

14 July 2014, 09:58

Moscow is considering a possibility of "pinpoint strikes" on Ukraine to retaliate against the bombardment of suburbs of Donetsk, Rostov region, Kommersant daily said, citing a source close to the Kremlin. The source said Russia "knew exactly where the gunfire was coming from." He noted that would not be a massive action but pinpoint strikes on the positions from where they were firing on Russia.

A similar idea has been suggested by Federation Council Vice-Speaker Yevgeny Bushmin, a representative of the Rostov region. In his opinion, precision weapons are able to stop shooting from the Ukrainian side.

The suburbs of Donetsk, Rostov region, came under fire early on Sunday morning when the Ukrainian army and the militia were fighting for control over the Izvaryno border checkpoint. A shell fired from Ukraine blew up in the yard of 47, Baltiyskaya Street. The explosion killed local resident Andrei Shulyatyev born in 1967.

Another shell hit a nearby house and injured a mother and a daughter. The 82-year-old woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition is serious: she has bone fractures and a concussion.

Moscow considers shelling another aggressive act by Kiev against sovereign territory, Russians

The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's charge d'affaires in Russia on Sunday to present a strong protest over the shelling of Russian territory from the Ukrainian side of the border. The incident may have "irreversible consequences," the ministry warned in an official statement released on Sunday. Russia regards Sunday's provocation as "yet another act of aggression on the part of Ukraine against sovereign Russian territory and citizens of the Russian Federation," the statement says.

Earlier, shells fired from Ukrainian side hit several houses in the border town of Donetsk in Russia's southern Rostov region, killing one person and injuring two others.

Russia vows tough measures against Ukraine after shooting incident in Rostov region - Foreign Ministry

Russia is considering a tough response in the wake of a shooting incident in its southern Rostov region where a shell fired from the Ukrainian side of the border hit a house, killing one person, Deputy Foreign Miniser Grigory Karasin said on Sunday.

"We are investigating the incident. It's a sign of a dangerous rise in tension on the border. This is a qualitatively higher degree of danger to our citizens Therefore, our demarches will be tough and precise. But first, we need to clarify all the circumstances of the incident," the diplomat said.

On Sunday morning, one person was killed and two others wounded after shells fired from the Ukrainian side hit several houses in the town of Donetsk in Russia's southern Rostov region, bordering Ukraine.

Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case in relation to the death of a man in the Donetsk district of the Rostov region after a shell from Ukrainian territory exploded, spokesman for the committee Vladimir Markin told Interfax on Sunday.

The investigative department of the committee for the Southern Federal District launched a criminal group murder enquiry into the case of two or more persons acting in a manner dangerous to the public, he said.

Markin said that a shell flew into the yard of a private homestead in the town of Donetsk, Rostov region, on July 13, killing a man who was born in 1968. In addition, a woman was injured by the shock wave.

Boeing 777 disaster in Ukraine spawns unbelievable conspiracy theories

18.07.2014

As it often happens after disasters that shock the whole world, rumors, legends, myths and fake assumptions start multiplying very quickly. The terrible tragedy with the Boeing 777 of Malaysia Airlines was no exception. Numerous messages began to appear on the Internet saying that many people knew about the disaster in advance and even warned about it. In addition, more than just suspicious recordings of radio conversations between flight control officers started to emerge on the net.

For example, on the night of July 18th, messages appeared on the Internet saying that a flight control officer said that two Su-25 aircraft were accompanying the Boeing.

"Spanish colleagues wrote to me a while ago, and they say that the Carlos, who reported about the fighter jets, was a fake. He wrote strange Spanish, no one knows about him in the embassy, and no one has ever seen him. The man, who introduces himself as Carlos is available on the Romanian number, but he speaks fluent Spanish. It is not clear, who the man is. At the Romanian embassy, no one has heard of him either. Carlos often refers to this or that journalist from Spain, and the journalists are shocked from the words that he puts in their mouth," Ukrainian journalist Anatoly Shary wrote on his Facebook page.

There are other versions in the spirit of conspiracy theories. Most people recall the March incident with the missing Malaysia Airlines Boeing with 239 on board that was never found. One of the versions said that the plane was hijacked. Some people supposed that it was the time when the plane came in handy to trigger a provocation, for which Russia could be blamed.

There is more curious information, which is simply impossible to believe. The comments were released from the commander of Donetsk militia Igor Strelkov, His remarks appeared on the Russian Spring website, vesti.ru reports.

"According to the people, who collected the bodies, many of the corpses are "not fresh." The people had died several days before the disaster. I would not assure that the information is true to fact, one needs to receive verification from forensic experts, of course," Strelkov said.

"In the plane, a large quantity of drugs, blood serum and other things were found, which is not typical for a conventional passenger liner. It seems that it was a special medical cargo," Strelkov said.

It can be possible, though, that the strange findings belonged to a group of AIDS researchers, who were traveling for a conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Strelkov also said that he talked to the people, who were collecting the fragments of the bodies soon after the plane crashed. According to them, there was very strong stench coming from the bodies.

"That smell could not appear in any weather, in 30 minutes, and yesterday, the weather was not hot, it was cloudy," he said. As for the pilots, their blood was all over the cockpit. "The whole cockpit was literally flooded with their blood," said Strelkov.

Of course, all of these "suspicious" assumptions do not seem to correspond to reliable evidence saying that the passengers were alive as they were boarding the plane. Some of them even uploaded videos and tweets on the Internet.

Forensic experts will undoubtedly be able to establish the time of the death of the passengers and the pilots of the Boeing. However, the fact that their passports that were collected from the ground after the crash turned out to be clean, as if they just came from the press, can not but raise eyebrows.

MH 17: Some conclusions - Did NATO try to murder Putin?

19.07.2014

Let us all begin by stating that the focus of this tragedy must be condolences with and respect for the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the incident in South-East Ukraine on July 17. That said, name-calling, grand-staging and mud-slinging merely underlines the lack of moral fibre among those who stoop to such tactics.

Right on cue, the western media was ready with fiery headlines, either blaming Russia directly, or Russia's President (absurdly) or else blaming anti-Kiev forces in South-East Ukraine, without a shred of evidence, as usual parading hearsay as fact, peddling "someone heard someone say" as the truth, and as usual manipulating and shaping public opinion, always against Moscow.

First, the facts

On July 17 the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER, Registration 9M-MRD, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, crashed 60 km. east of Donetsk near Hrabove village in Ukraine with 298 people on board (283 passengers and 15 crew). Flight MH 17 departed Schiphol Airport, Netherlands, at 12.14 local time (10.14 UTC) bound for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Airborne at 10.30 UTC, by 10.53 UTC it had reached a cruising altitude of FL 310, climbing to FL330 after entering Ukrainian airspace, the altitude it was flying when last contact was made at 13.19 UTC.

The following is a breakdown of the nationalities of the victims:

189 Netherlands, 44 Malaysia, 27 Australia, 12 Indonensia, 10 UK, 4 Belgium, 4 Germany, 3 Philippines, 1 Canada, 1 New Zealand. 4 persons remain to be identified.

Foolish accusations

No balanced appraisal made by a responsible person or news outlet worth reading will jump to conclusions yet as to who or what is to blame for the incident, until a thorough and objective investigation is launched and concluded. The anti-Kiev forces operating in the area were quick to state that they support such an investigation.

For its part, the Russian Defence Ministry states categorically that no units of the Russian Armed Forces were involved in the incident (of course, why should they be anyway because Russia does not control events in Eastern Ukraine, neither do the Eastern Ukrainians need Russia to pursue their goals):

"One should pay attention to the fact that Boeing 777 was conducting the flight beyond the range of air defense systems of the Russian Federation. The aircraft was flying in the airspace of Ukraine, under the control of its air traffic management system".

Furthermore, the Russian Defence Ministry states:

"In view of the objective investigation of the air crash of the Boeing 777 that crashed on the territory of Ukraine, it is necessary to conduct thorough investigation with the involvement of representatives of all interested international organizations. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, there are units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the disaster area; the units are armed with anti-aircraft missile systems Buk-M1. In the area of northwestern outskirts of Donetsk, divisions of the 156th anti-aircraft missile regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are deployed, with 27 Buk M1 complexes. These complexes, on their tactical and technical characteristics, are capable of detecting air targets at distances of up to 160 kilometers and striking them at all altitudes at a range of over 30 kilometers. Moreover, in the skies over the Donetsk region, aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force equipped with different types of missiles are constantly present. This is an undeniable fact.

"Statements from official Kiev saying that those complexes or aircraft did not open fire on air targets raise serious doubts. In such a short period of time, making such unequivocal conclusions under the conditions of fierce fighting in the area is impossible. Such responsible statements that entail serious legal consequences, require full investigation".

Questions

1. The story of the Ukrainian Air Force fighter jets reportedly seen accompanying MH17, the fact that eye witnesses claim they heard shots before the explosion and the taking over of Air Traffic Control by unknown persons (2);

2. The rumors that President Putin was believed to be flying over the same route at the time: Malaysia Airlines confirms "A flight from a different carrier was on the same route at the time of the MH17 incident" (1). Sources who have asked not to be named have claimed that the Russian President's aircraft has very similar contours and coloring to MH17 and that both aircraft intersected at the same point and altitude at a similar time. It was 200 miles behind MH 17. In the event it did not fly over Ukraine, but the trajectory could have fooled those who wanted to murder President Putin. NATO?;

3. Kiev's wrath against anti-Kiev commander Bes, who operates precisely in the area of the downed jetliner and the video tape of a supposed conversation between him and subordinates, uploaded five hours after the crash but placing the time of the crash 35 minutes before it actually took place. The log of the video shows it was made on July 16, so one day before the incident took place (3);

4. The video of a recorded conversation between a Ukrainian military pilot and command flying in the area at the same time (3);

5. The question of the BUK-M1 9K37 (Gadfly/SA-11) Missile system, which is a sophisticated piece of weaponry. The BUK surface-to-air missile system was developed in 1979. It consists of a Target Acquisition Radar (TAR), a Transporter Erector Launcher And Radar (TELAR) and a Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL). It is not a hand-held or shoulder-launched missile one can buy for 50,000 USD from any arms dealer. It is a sophisticated piece of equipment used by States.

If the anti-Kiev forces did use such a system, then those who use a BUK-M1 know how to differentiate between a military aircraft and a civilian one. A trigger-happy pilot might not.

6. The South-Eastern anti-Kiev forces have stated categorically that their own missile systems do not operate above 10,000 feet, much less at over 30,000 feet.

7. Why was the aircraft flying over a war zone, where ten aircraft have been downed recently (4)?

8. If surface-to-air missiles create round holes in the fuselage of the target, and air-air missiles create arrow-shaped forms, then why does the MH 17 have arrow-shaped forms in the fuselage?

9. Why does the downed aircraft show cladding damage characteristic with pin and shrapnel warheads (air-to-air systems), much more characteristic of R-27 TOPOR or R-73 missiles used on the Ukraine military MIG-29 and SU-27 aircraft?

The answer to all these questions is a full and complete, objective investigation. Russia has stated this is a priority, the anti-Kiev forces in South-East Ukraine have stated this is a priority.

How can any serious western news outlet start a blame game before all these issues are investigated? Over 1,000 civilians have been murdered by the Kiev regime in recent months. Military hardware is being used against civilians (a NATO modus operandi). Just today, the Kiev Junta murdered 44 civilians (women, children included) and wounded 255 others, in Lugansk. Random shelling.

And a western "news" outlet runs a headline "Putin's missile". Apart from sheer, sh*t-headed stupidity by a like-headed outlet for like-headed readers, what a total lack of respect for the victims and their families, trying to score points from a tragedy. After Iraq, after Libya, after Syria, would anyone seriously rule out a NATO attempt to murder President Putin?

The answer is not a categorical YES, or NO. It is an investigation. One thing is clear: President Putin was not responsible, for which reason the British news outlet running that headline should be sued? Or lose its readership. Nah! Not in the UK. It will be seen as an authority.

Donetsk Peoples Republic guarantees security to experts working at the Boeing crash site

July 20, 9:17 UTC+6

DPR calling on Kiev to conclude a ceasefire with the Donetsk Peoples Republic and create conditions for experts to work at a place where the plane had crashed

DONETSK, July 20 /ITAR-TASS/. The government of the self-proclaimed Donetsk Peoples Republic will guarantee security to international experts who will work at the Boeing 777 crash site.

The Kiev authorities are stubborn in their desire to shift the blame for the Malaysian Boeings crash to the self-defense forces without having any proof except for cheap fakes, Andrei Purgin, the vice-premier of the Donetsk Peoples Republic, wrote on the official website of the Donetsk Peoples Republic.

It has already become absolutely clear that the tragedy that claimed the lives of 300 people is the result of an inhumane plot, which could have been masterminded by various authors: the official authorities in Kiev; Ukraines hawkish generals or the leaders of the National Guard or the Right Sector movement which are acting at their own discretion. All of them have stained their hands with blood up to their elbows - the blood of civilians from Mariupol, Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Snezhnyi and Donetsk, Andrei Purgin stressed.

The purpose of their plane plot is to convince the global community that the people of Donbas are criminals who do not deserve any indulgences; to get a carte blanche to free use of the scorched earth tactics in the Donbas region; make international public turn a blind eye on mass extermination of people who are fighting for their freedom against forces that are personifying Nazism of the 21st century, the vice-premier of the Donetsk Peoples Republic said.

There can be no other explanation for Kievs unwillingness to conclude at least temporary ceasefire to ensure full-fledged investigation into the air crash in which the citizens of third countries died, Purgin went on to say.

He emphasized that the plane tragedy was the cause for disruption of a regular round of ceasefire consultations in which OSCE representatives were supposed to take part.

Purgin said that the fear of being exposed could be the only explanation for Kievs increasing military operation and unwillingness to send international experts to the crash site. The Kiev regime is referring to the danger of military hostilities which it itself is building up.

The government of the Donetsk Peoples Republic has always been ready to conclude ceasefire agreements, which the Ukrainian army has never observed in full measure. Every minute lived without fire preserves civilian lives, Purgin emphasized.

The government of the Donetsk Peoples Republic is stating that it guarantees security to international experts who will work at the crash site and is calling on Kiev to conclude a ceasefire with the Donetsk Peoples Republic and create conditions for experts to work at a place where the plane had crashed.

Boeing 777 of Malaysia Airlines, which was making flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed in Ukraines Donetsk region in the evening of July 17. All the 298 people onboard died. They include the citizens of 10 countries. Most of them are Dutch subjects (192). There were ten British passengers onboard.

Who shot down the Malaysian jet over Ukraine?

Voltaire Network | 18 July 2014

On July 17, 2014 the madness of three-month-long Ukrainian military conflict in the East has brought the first shocking international consequence. At 3.20PM GMT the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777-200 jet flight #MH-17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala-Lumpur disappeared inside the Ukrainian airspace right above the area of intense military combat in Donetsk region and crashed near Grabovo village, around 60 km to the east from Donetsk. All 285 passengers and 15 crew members have reportedly died.

According to data available the airliner was moving at the altitude of 10,600 meters on the 350th flight level. This flight level was opened for international transit flights, despite since July 8, 2014 the Ukrainian aviation authorities did not recommend international transit flights in the area below 302th level i.e. 9600 meters due to the anti-terrorist operation unleashed in the area involving Ukrainian pursuit aviation and air-defense capabilities in action. So formally the Malaysian company complied with the ruling of Ukrainian civil aviation authority although the security risk for the flight was evident.

The area of the catastrophe is indeed the epicentre of the ongoing fierce fighting between regular Ukrainian army units and rebellious armed militias of Novorossia opposing anti-constitutional February coup detat in Kiev. An informed source monitoring operational situation in the area has revealed earlier on Wednesday that a battery of Buk antiaircraft missile systems of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was deployed near Donetsk. At present, another battery of the same missile systems is being loaded in Kharkiv. The aircraft flying at the altitude of more than 10 thousand meters might be hit only with weapons like S-300 or Buk. The militias dont have such weapons, and cannot afford them as it was acknowledged even by the Ukrainian Defense minister Valery Galetey in a statement on another issue two days before the Flight MH-17 tragedy:

a powerful weapon must have been used to down the plane flying at 6,500 meters, an altitude the shoulder-fired missiles used by the separatists cant reach.

The Russian military expert Igor Korotchenko argues that the catastrophe in Donetsk was most likely caused by the incompetence and non-professionalism of the Ukrainian operators of the Buk systems during its testing after the battery was deployed in the new location. He said that the Ukrainian antiaircraft unit did not have any kind of proper training for the last 23 years since the collapse of Soviet Union.

What happened today is hardly the first case of errant shooting of the Ukrainian military on civilian air targets. On October 4, 2001 the Russian Siberia Airline flight #1812 Tel-Aviv-Novosibirsk carrying 66 passengers and 12 crew members was erroneously hit by a Ukrainian missile over the Black Sea during military exercises, which was eventually admitted by the Ukrainian side. No one on board survived.

So regardless the MH-17 incident was caused by the criminal negligence and incompetence of the Ukrainian military or deliberate (and reckless) Kievs provocation to put blame on Russia, the strong international commitment to make Kiev immediately halt its punitive actions in Novorossia until all the circumstances of the tragedy are thoroughly investigated is urgently needed.

Ukrainian Su-25 was approaching Malaysian Boeing, Russian officials say

21.07.2014

Russian radars recorded a Ukrainian Su-25, that was supposedly flying in the direction of the Malaysian jetliner that crashed above the territory of Ukraine, representatives of the General Staff said at a press conference.

"An aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force was gaining altitude, its distance from the Malaysian Boeing ranged from 3 to 5 km, according to our records," the head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff, Andrei Kartopolov said.

The general noted that the Su-25 is capable of reaching the altitude of ten kilometers and striking targets at a distance of 12 kilometers. "We would like to have an answer to the question as to what purpose the Ukrainian aircraft was flying on the civil track, at the same level with the Malaysian Boeing," said Kartopolov.

On July 17, the plane of Malaysia Airlines crashed on the territory of the Donetsk region. There were 298 people on board; all of them were killed.

DONETSK: We landed in this town fearing the worst. We had been told of the incessant fighting, the unrest and the fierce battles that rage here.

How true those words of warning were.

As we arrived at the Donetsk train station after a four-hour journey across eastern Ukraine, gunshots rang out. Civilians ran helter-skelter, looking for cover.

When we arrived here, we came face to face with the escalating conflict, a matter which will likely make it more difficult for investigators to access the MH17 crash site. The Ukraine army had started a new offensive against the pro-Russian rebels.

Soon after the train came to a stop at the Donetsk station, soldiers from the Donetsk Peoples Republic ran to escort us and other passengers to a nearby underground tunnel.

More than a hundred civilians were there, cowering by the walls as sporadic gunfire was heard outside.

DPR soldiers stood nearby and shouted at the civilians to stay calm while snipers checked buildings for any sign of armed personnel.

We saw no sign of other armed men, which locals here later claimed were from the Ukrainian army.

The DPR soldiers then organised buses to come for the civilians, shouting for women and children to make their way up the steps first.

As the first groups of people rushed to the buses, gunfire rang out again, causing many to run back towards the underground tunnel.

There, they waited as more DPR troops arrived to secure the area.

The gunfire subsided for a while, and more buses arrived at the train station many minutes later.

We made a run for them, hopping into one of the buses that would later take us to the city centre and to our hotel. We were dropped off at an intersection, and watched as DPR soldiers riding on tanks and armoured personnel carriers sped towards the fight.

It was a different feel from Dnepropetrovsk, the nearest city with an international airport to Donetsk, about 300km away.

There, within official Ukrainian territory, things appeared to be a lot more peaceful, with none of the fighting that was going on around here.

People in Dnepropetrovsk, however, did not seem to have the same sentiments as their Donetsk brethren.

A taxi driver whom we met in the city seemed to speak only two words that we could understand: Putin and terrorist when we mentioned Donetsk to him.

The first he spoke with a spitting sound, a feeling that seemed to be shared by many in the city.

We now have to make our way to the site where Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crashed near a small town called Grabovo on July 17.

To do that, we have to travel deep within Ukraines Donbass region, a territory contested between the Ukrainian army and several rebel groups.

Before leaving Dnepropetrovsk, we met Syrian student Raed, who had been studying in Ukraine for about five years. He talked about the disputed area.

Over there, they are Russian lovers. They think they are a different country. When you go there, it is a different country, he said in halting English.

It is truly a tale of two regions, with MH17 caught unfortunately in between, and the much-needed investigators still too far away to safely inspect what led to its end.

Ukraines Grad Rocket Launchers Shell Russias Rostov Region Border Security Service

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 2 (RIA Novosti) Nine shells have been fired from Ukraines Grad multiple rocket launchers, according to preliminary reports, and exploded on the territory of Tarasovsky District in Russias Rostov Region, Vasily Malev, a representative of the Russian Security Service in the Rostov Region told RIA Novosti Saturday.

Nine craters were detected in the area of the Mityakinskaya village in Rostov Region. The fragments of shells presumably indicate that they were fired from Grad multiple rocket launchers, Malev said.

The incident resulted in no casualties.

Since the beginning of the special military operation launched by Kiev to suppress independence supporters in the east of Ukraine, the clashes in the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions neighboring the Russian border have become more frequent.

The Russian-Ukrainian border has been hit multiple times by the Ukrainian artillery and mortar fire. In a more recent incident, one civilian died and two more were injured in the Russian city of Donetsk in the Rostov region bordering eastern Ukraine.

On July 30, Rostovs regional government reported that since the military operation in southeastern Ukraine started, one person has been killed and nine injured as a result of Ukrainian shelling of the Russian territory.

Moscow condemned the attacks, saying that such provocations may have irreversible consequences.

12 Ukrainian Troops Seek Asylum in Russia TV Reports

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) A group of 12 Ukrainian troops has reached the Gukovo checkpoint in Russias Rostov Region and requested asylum in Russia, the Rossiya-24 TV channel reported on Sunday.

The servicemen, both officers and soldiers from the 72th motorized brigade, went through the neutral zone of the Russian-Ukrainian border carrying a white flag and no weapons on them.

Absolutely, we are not traitors. We are in no war with Russia. There can be some 'misunderstanding,' but there is no war. To save the lives of my subordinates, a decision has been taken to move them out via Russia, a Ukrainian officer told the TV channel.

Earlier reports said more than 40 Ukrainian servicemen have abandoned their military units and asked independence supporters to allow them to come to Russia in order not to fight against their own people.

In mid-April, Kiev launched a military crackdown on independence supporters in eastern Ukraine. According to the latest UN report, the conflict has claimed the lives of 1,129 civilians since then, with another 3,442 injured.

Moscow has repeatedly condemned Kievs war against own people and urged an immediate stop to the punitive operation, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Over 400 Ukrainian Military Personnel Request Refugee Status in Russia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-OsrCkXTNY

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 4 (RIA Novosti) More than 400 Ukrainian military personnel requested refugee status from Russian border guards on Monday and Russias Federal Security Service (FSB) has opened a corridor for the soldiers, a spokesman for the border control agency told RIA Novosti.

Overnight 438 Ukrainian military personnel turned to Russian border guards with a request for refugee (status), the head of the FSBs border control in the southern Russian region of Rostov, Vasily Malaeyev, said.

Border control authorities have opened a humanitarian corridor and have allowed refugees into Russia. Among the 438 personnel, 164 are employees of Ukraines State Border Service.

Fierce battles in Ukraines southeastern regions have not abated since mid-April when Kiev officials announced the beginning of a special operation against local independence supporters. As a result, many Ukrainian servicemen left their military posts to cross into Russia.

On Sunday, 12 soldiers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces made it into Russia and applied for an asylum at Gukovo checkpoint in Russias Rostov Region, saying they had run out of food and ammunition.

Last month, another 40 Ukrainian troops abandoned their military units and asked independence supporters to allow them to come to Russia in order not to fight against their own people.

Putin: People who give orders bear resposibility for victims of Ukraine conflict

January 23, 16:49 UTC+5

Russian President Vladimir Putin said orders to kill people are given amid propaganda slogans about desire for peace

NOVO-OGARYOVO, January 23. /TASS/. People who give orders to fire at crowded locations bear responsibility for the deaths of dozens in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

Dozens of people have been killed or wounded as a result, and not only among military personnel on both sides, but what's even more tragic is that there are also casualties among civilians. These are children, old people and women, Putin said, adding that heavy military machines, artillery, and combat aviation was continually being used in the conflict zone in Ukraines south-east

And all this happens to the accompaniment of propaganda slogans about desire for peace and search for those responsible, the president said, Those who give such criminal orders bear responsibility for this. People doing that should know that there is no other way of resolving such conflicts than peace negotiations and political measures.

The Russian president expressed hope on Friday that common sense will prevail in Kiev, and Ukraine will adhere to peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbas.

"We often hear statements, including by current Kiev authorities, that Ukraine sticks to this [peaceful] way of solving problems but everything is different in practice," the Russian leader said.

"I hope that common sense will finally prevail," Putin said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in a letter sent on January 16 he suggested his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko should withdraw troops to the line which Kiev earlier believed to be fair.

Putin told the meeting that the proposed line was in the framework of the September 19 Minsk agreement. He said there was one controversial area, namely the area of the disengagement line of the conflicting parties.

This was a written proposal to withdraw heavy weaponry - artillery and multiple rocket launchers to such a distance from which it would be impossible to deliver destruction to settlements.

The Russian leader also said the situation in eastern Ukraine has sharply deteriorated.

We have not only failed to receive any clear answer to our proposal, but also saw reverse actions and namely Kiev authorities issued an official order to launch large-scale armed actions practically along the whole perimeter of the contact between the warring parties, Putin said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this week that in recent days Russia has consistently made efforts to mediate the conflict. However, the Ukrainian side, which received the letter by Friday morning, regrettably turned down the plan and proposed nothing instead.

Ukrainian presidential adviser Yuri Biryukov said earlier that the Ukrainian military received orders to open massive fire on the positions of the militias in the military operation zone in the country's east.
